4th Grade All-Stars

Week At A Glance:

Math: How do various fractions compare in size (0, ½, and 1)? What are the numerator and denominator? How do we find fractional parts of sets? What are equivalent fractions? What are improper fractions and mixed numbers?

Science: How does light travel? How can light be absorbed, reflected, or refracted by objects? How does light behave when it strikes materials? What is ROY G. BIV?

Language Arts: We will read the story The Case of Pablo’s Nose by Donald J. Sobol. Our focus will be putting events in chronological order (story order) as well as possessive pronouns. Our spelling words focus on the prefixes un- and dis-. Spelling test will be on Friday! We will continue our essay writings that we started with Dr. Moore, “What life would be like with no TV.”

Social Studies: We will continue our research projects this week and hope to complete these by Friday. CHAPTER 8 TEST Tuesday.

Special Announcements:
· Don’t forget to send in your Stone Mountain Intention Letter by tomorrow. We need to get an accurate count so we know how to plan for buses. FYI….the $75.00 covers the cost of the ticket, transportation (charter buses) as well as dinner. We will be taking sack lunches from school or you may bring your own lunch. The trip will be April 30th 7:45 am – 7:00 pm. $25.00 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit for ALL going (students & chaperones) due March 6th.

Week At A Glance:

Math: How do various fractions compare in size (0, ½, and 1)? What are the numerator and denominator? How do we find fractional parts of sets? What are equivalent fractions? How do we find equivalent fractions? What are improper fractions? What are mixed numbers?

Science: What are the basic properties of light? What is light made up of? How does light travel? How can light be absorbed, reflected, or refracted by objects? How does light behave when it strikes materials?

Language Arts: We will read the story The Kid’s Invention Book by Jean Arlene Erlbach. Our focus will be recognizing the main idea as well as details to support the main idea. We will also focus on following written directions. We will identify subject and object pronouns. We will work in the classroom with spelling words that end with y and ey. However, due to our short week we will not have a typical spelling test. We will have an open book comprehension quiz on Friday.

Social Studies: We will begin our research projects this week. We will read and begin to outline our information.

Special Announcements:
· Due to some schedule changes this week, students were not able to begin their research projects. We will begin them this week. All research will be completed during class time. We will also write a three paragraph paper based upon the information the students collected on their individual from the American Revolution time period. If your child would like to dress up as the individual they have researched, they may do so. Presentations will be on Thursday, February 26th and Friday, February 27th. Please note dressing up is NOT a requirement for this project! Our focus will be on the process of doing a research project and writing a summary!

Week At A Glance:

Math: How do various fractions compare in size (0, ½, and 1)? What are the numerator and denominator? How do we find fractional parts of sets? What are equivalent fractions? How do we find equivalent fractions?

Science: We will begin our study on light.

Language Arts: We will read the story Look to the North by Jean Craighead George. Our focus will be on summarizing important information from text. We will also learn that pronouns take the place of nouns and antecedents are the noun or nouns that the pronouns refer to. We will not have a spelling test due to our short week but we will discuss and learn that ei, eigh and ie can say long a and long e. Dr. Moore, our literacy coach, will come on Thursday and do a practice writing activity for our PASS Writing Assessment, which will be March 10 and 11. We look forward to her visit and writing activity.

Social Studies: We will continue Chapter 8: The Road to War. Students will begin their research projects this week. All research will be completed during class time. However, if students would like to dress up as the individual they have researched, they may do so. Some presentations will be Friday, February 20th. More information will be sent home later this week stating who you child has chosen to research, as well as their presentation date. This long weekend may be a good chance to gather a costume. Please note dressing up is NOT a requirement for this project! Our focus will be on the process of doing a research project and writing a summary!

Week At A Glance:

Math: How do various fractions compare in size (0, ½, and 1)? What are the numerator and denominator? How do we find fractional parts of sets? What are equivalent fractions? How do we find equivalent fractions?

Science: What are essential for the flow of electricity? What are the two types of circuits and how do they differ? We will finish our unit on electricity and test on Thursday.

Language Arts: We will continue to focus on trait writing, an instructional model that teaches students the seven main components of good writing. This week we will focus on organization: the internal structure of the piece, the thread of central meaning, the pattern of logic. Thank you for taking time Thursday night to interact with your child about their writing! We had a GREAT discussion Friday about things we learned and suggestions you made to help your child become a better writer. By giving your input we are making a POWERFUL team to spur your children along in their development! You are the BEST!
